The Infamous Bimbo Coles Show

A pretty simple gag, really, but it seemed to really touch a nerve. Also, it had the benefit of advance intelligence, which never hurts. Pep Band Operatives had learned the nature of halftime festivities to be held at the 1988 UVa/Virginia Tech football matchup in that backwater known as Blacksburg. Virginia Tech basketball player and United States Olmpian, Bimbo Coles, was to be honored in a special ceremony, and presented with a key to the City by the Mayor.

The Pep Band performed its own half-time homage, by having a mock-mayor present a mock-Bimbo with the key to the City Outhouse, among other things.

Many were un-amused, including then-UVa President Robert O'Neil (the "Muppet on Carr's Hill", later forcibly retired), who is still commonly quoted to this day as having said that the Pep Band would "have to shape up, or there were going to be some major changes made." Needless to say, this was our last field performance at Virginia Tech - and almost certainly always will be.
